An integral approach to bedrock river profile analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
Bedrock river profiles are often interpreted with the aid of slope–area analysis, but noisy topographic data make such interpretations challenging. We present an alternative approach based on an integration of the steady-state form of the stream power equation. The main component of this approach is a transformation of the horizontal coordinate that converts a steady-state river profile into a straight line with a slope that is simply related to the ratio of the uplift rate to the erodibility. The transformed profiles, called chi plots, have other useful properties, including co-linearity of steady-state tributaries with their main stem and the ease of identifying transient erosional signals. We illustrate these applications with analyses of river profiles extracted from digital topographic datasets. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Geochemistry analysis of river sediments, carbonate cemented and paleosols horizons and the implications for provenance and chemical weathering (Case Study: Saqqez River)
Introduction In theory, the bulk composition of the sediment may provide a way of determining the provenance of this material if there is sufficient diversity in the bedrock compositions. However, sediment compositions may be changed from the original bedrock as a result of transport and chemical weathering. The geochemistry of bedload and suspended sediments has been used by many workers to d...

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are used to estimate different morphologies, analysis of river profile, delineating drainage basin and drainage pattern associated with lithological and structural changes. The study area is Maroon River located in Khuzestan Province, Iran. In this study geomorphometric analysis based on DEM carried out to understand Maroon river uplift rate and tectonic- erosion...
متن کاملModeling flow and sediment transport dynamics in the lowermost Mississippi River, Louisiana, USA, with an upstream alluvialâ•’bedrock transition and a downstream bedrockâ•’alluvial transition: Implications for land building using engineered diversions
The lowermost Mississippi River, defined herein as the river segment downstream of the Old River Control Structure and hydrodynamically influenced by the Gulf of Mexico, extends for approximately 500 km. This segment includes a bedrock (or more precisely, mixed bedrock-alluvial) reach that is bounded by an upstream alluvial-bedrock transition and a downstream bedrock-alluvial transition. Here w...
متن کاملA Fluvial Record of Long-term Steady-state Uplift and Erosion across the Cascadia Forearc High, Western Washington State
Six late Quaternary river terraces, preserved along the Clearwater River in northwestern Washington State, provide a ;140 ka record of long-term incision and uplift across the western side of the Cascadia forearc high. Terrace ages are constrained by weathering rind and radiocarbon dating and by correlation to dated coastal glacio-fluvial deposits and the global eustatic curve. The terraces ove...
متن کاملThe effects of rock uplift and rock resistance on river morphology in a subduction zone forearc, Oregon, USA
Relationships between riverbed morphology, concavity, rock type and rock uplift rate are examined to independently unravel the contribution of along-strike variations in lithology and rates of vertical deformation to the topographic relief of the Oregon coastal mountains. Lithologic control on river profile form is reflected by convexities and knickpoints in a number of longitudinal profiles an...
